Despite Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle’s recent problems, Nebraska Congressman Lee Terry believes it is too early to talk about throwing Suttle out of office.

In a recent interview with Nebraska Watchdog Terry said, “Right now I think any discussions of recall are premature.”

That’s right Republican Lee Terry has Democrat Jim Suttle’s back.

The recall chatter does not appear to be as loud as it was a few months ago but it is still more than a whisper.

Since his election on May 12th, 2009 Suttle has been involved in several controversies. Those include hiring problems and most recently a roller coaster budget ride that finds the city’s property taxes set to jump 10% next year.

Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle

Suttle was sworn into office June 8th, 2009. According to state law a recall petition drive cannot be launched until an elected official has served six months in office; in Suttle’s case no earlier than December 8th, 2009.

According to Douglas County Election Commissioner Dave Phipps, anyone circulating a recall petition would have 30 days to collect 26,642 valid signatures. Following a successul petition drive Suttle could choose to either resign or stand for election. If he ran and lost, another election would be held to choose Suttle’s successor.

Nebraska Watchdog asked Terry to grade Suttle’s first three months in office. According to Terry, “Well he’s made some mistakes…he certainly made some hiring errors that have created some problems for him, even before he took office, but he’ll have time to recover.”

Guess it’s time for me to re-assess Terry! Not so sure I will vote for him next time!

Rep. Terry is now in psuedo-democrat mode. He has to appear to be moderate at home since he’s precariously close to losing in 2010. However, what Rep. Terry doesn’t realize (or maybe he does and is hedging his bets) is that his base is not too happy to see him acting like this. However, pontificating at home is one thing. Voting for conservative principles in DC is another.

My personal belief is that Rep. Terry is doing what he needs to do right now and if things continue to deteriorate for Mayor Suttle, he has the option to change his mind. And changing your mind based on a change of facts is not a bad thing.

The voters have to take the blame for this property tax, not for voting for Suttle but for voting for the stupid bond issue which was used to build the convention center. I worked hard to stop that bond issue but no one listened.
